Pilates

Pilates was developed in the 20th century as an exercise program to rehabilitating war veterans. It is a combination of yoga and aerobics that focuses primarily on the core muscles. Through the practice mental control of the body is developed increasing muscle strength as well as toning. It shares many of the same ideals as yoga promoting good mental as well as physical health.

In Pilates, it is essential to breath correctly. It is essential to develop proper breathing patterns as it helps to breathe life to depleted cells while flushing away exhaustion. Along with proper breathing habits these exercises also focus on ideals such as concentration, control, precision, and flexibility. Strengthening the core muscles is a primary focus; the core should always be engaged for proper posture as well as to decrease the risk of injury.

Pilates is often preformed on a machine known as the reformer. The reformer offers an exercise that is more intense because it offers more muscle resistance. Through the use of a mat, the focus becomes the core muscles as opposed to allover resistance. Regardless of whether a machine or a mat is used, benefits such as long lean muscles can be achieved through regular practice. These and other yoga supplies can be found online or at your local fitness store.
